Beetle larva (please help identify) devours a caterpillar (also, identification needed)

We found this drama of the leaf litter in mid-May, 2011 in Missouri's SW Ozarks. After a good 45 minutes, the beetle larva had exhausted the caterpillar's resistance, pierced through its abdominal exoskeleton, and ate its contents.
